Most Notable: Greensboro NC, also known as Gate City, is home to some of the most notable historical events in US History. In the early 1840s, Greensboro made its way to be one of the first stops in North Carolina for the new railway system and since then prospered. Cotton and textiles paved the way for many early residents but Tobacco quickly became a tried and true resource of income for many. Even today, Greensboro is home to the third-largest Tobacco company in the United States. Though the Civil War had marched its way directly through Greensboro not much later, the city was indirectly focused on by some of the North’s top investors and the textile industry become the key player in the city’s growth once again. By the late 1800’s two of North Carolina’s top colleges were established; North Carolina A&T University (a historically black college) and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. On February 1st, 1960, Woolworths Lunch Counter became the sight to one of the most well-known sit-ins in America. While the original counters/stools are on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the building itself still stands and welcomes visitors as the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.
