For the past 69 years, the North Carolina Azalea Festival has been a main event of pageantry full of music, galas and family fun. Every April, Wilmington comes alive with charm surrounded by the beautifully blooming azaleas for which the festival is named.
Thousands flock to the two-day Street Fair where Southern belles are escorted to the annual garden party, interactive displays line a street fair and special exhibits draw you in to the colorful community. Garden and home tours are open throughout the festival, as well as art exhibits and many different entertainment events.
Queen Azalea begins the festivities with the Festival Parade, regaling the springtime pastime each and every year. Blooming azaleas are the star of the show, in full bloom each year. Several private VIP parties and receptions are held, as well as hospital and school visits by the Queen Azalea and her court.
Family friendly events are constant during the festival including music by locals, the Queen’s coronation and a fun run. The Street Fair offers many different activities at several vendor booths stretching across four streets. A horse show, boxing match, coin show are all fun things to partake in. The Multicultural Stage offers insight into the different cultures of the area and provide authentic entertainment. You can’t miss the huge parade and the beautiful fireworks either!
