The Highlights of Boylan Heights

Boylan Heights is a welcome respite from busy city life and such modern times. This historic, peaceful, hilltop neighborhood features well-maintained bungalows, lush green manicured lawns and friendly neighbors. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The vast majority of homes here have been built between 1907 and 1935. Nearly all the lots have backyard alleys allowing the front of the home to be the center point while providing hidden access to garages. Many of the homes offer its residents awesome views overlooking the city skyline.

Where is Boylan Heights in Raleigh?

If you go to downtown Raleigh and turn west, you will pass right through Boylan Heights. It is located specifically between Hillsborough Street and Western Boulevard along Boylan Avenue. It is roughly bordered by the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks along with Martin and Florence Streets and Dorothea Drive.

What Makes Boylan Heights Special

Boylan Heights is a neighborhood that is the epitome of what North Carolina stands for. There is a true sense of community. On a Saturday morning you will find the neighbors out chatting with each other as they are walking their dogs along the winding tree-lined streets to the nearby bakery, Boulted Bread. The neighborhood is full of mature trees and concrete sidewalks. Many of the homes are set further back off the street allowing a larger more expansive front lawns. It is a lovely city suburb with curvy streets yet so close to downtown.

Walk Score rated this neighborhood with a score of 80 which is classed as “Very Walkable.” Because of the wide variety of nearby amenities, “most errands can be accomplished on foot.” Public transportation is available and an Amtrak line is within the neighborhood.  Boylan Heights offers a unique selection of restaurants to suit nearly every type of taste bud. You can also bring the family to Pullen Park and enjoy the paddle boats, carousel and train ride. There is also the community Dupont Circle Park.

Being the first city planned suburbs in Raleigh, it also has one of the oldest pre-Civil War mansions called Montfort Hall. It was built in 1858 for William Montfort Boylan.

Attractions and Amenities in Boylan Heights, Raleigh

Boylan Heights ArtWalk is a popular event in this neighborhood. It is sort of a kick-off to the holiday season and features over a hundred artists and craftsmen that will be selling their wares from the front porches and sidewalks of area resident’s homes. The neighborhood also has several quality schools in the area including Wiley Elementary, Daniels Middle School and Broughton High School.
